Celtic’s summer recruitment drive may not be slowing down.
According to reports from Mercato, the Scottish champions have shown a genuine interest in Stade Reims defensive midfielder Mory Gbane, with the French club reportedly open to selling the Ivorian this summer.
However, Celtic are unlikely to have a clear run at the player. Premier League side West Ham United are also credited with monitoring the midfielder, meaning any move could become increasingly competitive if formal bids arrive.
The reported interest raises an interesting question about Martin O’Neill’s transfer plans. While much of the focus has been on adding firepower in attack, strengthening the middle of the park is just as important if Celtic are to compete domestically and in Europe.
Gbane is regarded as a physical, ball-winning midfielder who is comfortable shielding the defence while also driving his team forward. Those qualities could add another dimension to Celtic’s midfield, providing balance alongside the club’s more creative players.
At this stage, though, supporters should treat the story with caution. Interest does not always develop into negotiations, and Celtic have been linked with numerous players before moving in different directions.
What is clear is that the club continue to cast their net across Europe in search of quality and value. Whether Mory Gbane becomes the next name through the door remains to be seen, but it is another transfer story worth keeping a close eye on.
