When Celtic Must Register Their Champions League Squad – And Why Time Is Running Out

The countdown is well and truly on.

Celtic have around four weeks until UEFA’s deadline to submit their Champions League List A squad, with registration closing on 13 August ahead of the play-off round. The first leg follows just days later on 18 or 19 August, leaving precious little time to bring in, integrate and prepare any new signings for the biggest matches of the season.

UEFA rules do allow clubs to register a maximum of two additional eligible players after the main deadline, but only under limited circumstances and only if space is made in the 25-man squad. That is hardly a strategy a club with Celtic’s ambitions should be relying on.

With the clock ticking, supporters are becoming increasingly anxious.

Martin O’Neill needs his squad settled well before those crucial European nights. New players require time to learn the system, build relationships with teammates and reach full match sharpness. Every day lost in the transfer market is another day that cannot be recovered.

Which brings us to Celtic chief executive Michael Nicholson.

Supporters can only hope the Scarlet Pimpernel is finally hard at work. They seek him here, they seek him there… Rarely seen and even more rarely heard, Nicholson has become something of a mystery figure during transfer windows.

Perhaps an even more fitting comparison is the Wizard of Oz.

From the outside, everything is presented as calm and under control. But if the curtain is pulled back and Celtic are still desperately chasing signings as the Champions League registration deadline arrives, supporters will inevitably ask whether there was ever a clear plan at all. The image of control counts for little if the reality behind the scenes is disorganisation and delay.

Celtic are in a position of strength financially. They have known for months that Champions League qualification would be decided in August. Recruitment should have been proactive, not reactive.

The UEFA deadline is fixed.

The only question now is whether Celtic’s executives can finally deliver the players Martin O’Neill needs before time runs out. If they fail, there will be no hiding behind the curtain.
