“I’m very much motivated to go again.”
Those seven words should give Celtic supporters real confidence about the season ahead. Martin O’Neill has not agreed to remain as manager simply because the club needed someone to occupy the position. He has stayed because the hunger is still there and because he genuinely believes he can take Celtic forward.
That motivation matters. O’Neill knows exactly what managing Celtic demands. He understands the pressure, the relentless expectation to win and the responsibility that comes with representing a club of this size.
He also knows Celtic must improve.
Last season ended successfully, but it also delivered several warnings. The title race became far closer than Celtic would ever have wanted, Champions League qualification was missed and the team did not always perform with the authority expected of champions.
O’Neill will not need anyone to explain those shortcomings to him. He has experienced Celtic at their strongest and understands the standards required to make the club dominant in Scotland and respected in Europe.
There is something reassuring about placing Celtic in his hands for a full season. He already knows the squad, understands which areas need strengthening and possesses the authority to make difficult decisions. The players know exactly who is in charge, while any new arrivals will immediately understand the standards expected of them.
This cannot be treated as a sentimental final year. O’Neill is not back at Celtic merely to celebrate his previous achievements. He is here to create new ones.
His experience could be particularly valuable during the Champions League qualifiers. Celtic have entered too many important European ties looking uncertain, underprepared and short of the necessary quality. O’Neill has managed on the biggest stages and understands how to prepare a team for matches where one mistake can shape an entire season.
Of course, he must be backed properly. Motivation alone cannot compensate for weaknesses in the squad or a lack of depth. The board must provide him with the players required to compete rather than expecting his personality and experience to cover failures in recruitment.
For the next year, Celtic are in the hands of someone who understands the club, embraces its expectations and still possesses the hunger to succeed.
