Celtic face their toughest pre-season test so far this evening as they take on Sporting CP in Portugal.
The match kicks off at 5:30pm (UK time) at the Estádio do Algarve, where Martin O’Neill’s side have been based for their summer training camp. Supporters can watch the game live on Celtic TV, with coverage beginning at 5:15pm. The match will not be shown on mainstream television in the UK.
There has, however, been one setback ahead of kick-off. New signing Camilo Durán will miss the game through illness, denying supporters another chance to see the Colombian striker continue his integration into the squad.
Despite that blow, there are still plenty of positives. Jota is back training as he continues his recovery, Cameron Carter-Vickers has returned to action, and Callum Osmand will be hoping for another opportunity to impress. The possibility of Kelechi Iheanacho returning to the club has also added to the growing optimism surrounding Celtic’s forward options.
Sporting are expected to be without Zeno Debast, João Simões and Fotis Ioannidis through injury, although the Portuguese champions will still provide a demanding test as both sides continue their preparations for the new campaign.
The fixture also carries added significance as it marks the beginning of Celtic’s commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions‘ 1966/67 European Cup triumph. Returning to Portugal is a fitting way to honour the club’s greatest achievement.
Pre-season results are never the main focus, but performances matter. With the Scottish Premiership opener now fast approaching, supporters will be looking for sharper attacking play, improved fitness, and further signs that Martin O’Neill’s squad is coming together.
Durán’s absence is disappointing, but tonight still offers another valuable opportunity for Celtic to continue building momentum ahead of the season that lies ahead.
