Callum McGregor possibly leaving Celtic cannot simply be dismissed as a player chasing one final payday. Money talks, especially when a player is approaching the later stages of his career, but McGregor has already made it clear that his future is connected to something far bigger: Celtic’s ambition.
His words were unmistakable. McGregor said he wanted to remain “as long as the club’s ambition matches my own.” That was not a throwaway comment. It was a warning to a board that has repeatedly failed to strengthen the team properly from a position of power.
Martin O’Neill now plans to speak with McGregor following the captain’s recent change of representation. He has apparently given no indication that he definitely wants to leave, but the fact this conversation is even required should concern everyone.
Losing McGregor would be enormous. He is the captain, the leader and the player who understands Celtic better than anyone. Yet there is another side to it. Would his departure force Celtic to freshen up a midfield that has depended on him for too long?
When Scott Brown left in 2021, many believed his leadership could never be replaced. McGregor stepped forward, inherited the armband and became the heartbeat of the next Celtic team. Great players eventually leave, and properly run clubs prepare for that reality rather than fear it.
A move might give McGregor a fresh challenge and Celtic an opportunity to build something new. But that only works if the club has a serious succession plan.
The real concern is not that McGregor might leave. It is that the board could see another major departure approaching and still do nothing until it is too late.
McGregor can be replaced. Leadership and standards can be rebuilt. What Celtic cannot afford is another summer of hesitation disguised as strategy.
